As we dug to 20' sand and water began to cave in the hole and diameter became 10'. Stopped digging and decision was made to install a vent system 30' x 50' underground with 3 steel stand pipe 12' above grade. Berger Constuction was hired to complete the project at a cost of $12,000.00. Filled caved area with 57 stone 30 tons to stabilize hole. Saftey fence was installed around peremeter until job is complete. Mike McCormac was present for the decision. Sun, 60 degrees.

GPS'd system corners and drawed diagram of site for file.Sun, 50 degrees.
1238696590 2009-03-24 Dave Berger placed approximately six inches of washed "57" gravel aross the floor of the excavation. The lowest part of the ecavation was in the southeast corner with the highest point in the northwest corner. The collection system was placed on top of the gravel and consisted of 4" slotted, re-enforced, corrugated, black PVC with snap connectors. The two gathering lines ran east-west and were located along the north and south walls. The cross lines were connected to the gathering lines on two foot centers and ran north to south across the excavation. The vent stack was placed in the northwest corner of the excavation. The collection system was then covered with approximately two inches of washed "57" gravel. Activity stopped for the day with the collection system installed and the majority covered with gravel. Tomorrow will finish covering the system before placing the road mat over the gravel. We discussed pinning the mat along the edges of the excavation to establish a barrier before backfilling with native material.
1240408702 2009-04-22 Inspected vent pipe and gas readings are 100% lel out of port. Ground work has not been completed. Rain, 40 degrees.

1639719788 2009-03-25 The morning rain delayed work on site until after noon. On this day Dave Berger finished covering the collection system with washed gravel before backfilling the hole with stockpiled native material. After compaction, additional material will likely be necessary to bring the excavated area back to grade. The only work remaining for the collection system is to install the last section of the vent stack.
1686653990 2010-04-12 Tested vent pipe with gas detector and after 5 seconds 100% lel. Meter was over limit. Methane vapors are visible at rain cap on vent. Sun, 60 degrees.

554817210 2009-03-23 On this day, Dave Berger was on site to 1) finish cleaning out the excavation, 2) obtain the necessary supplies and 3) prepare for installing the gas recovery system starting on 3/24. The washed "57" gravel came from the Rupp Sand & Gravel and the slotted drainage pipe came from ADS in Wooster. The steel vent supplies were purchased from Wolfe Brothers. The plan for tomorrow is to backfill the excavation with six inches of gravel before starting to assemble the collection system using slotted, reenforced, corrugated, 4" drain pipe with snap connectors. On site this morning, at different times, were Chief Don Sweigert, City Manager Larry Boggs and County EMA John Wise.
678493095 2009-05-07 Met with Dave Berger on location. He is spreading top soil and grading disturbed area. Seed and mulching for city of Rittman. LEL readings from vent pipe test port is 36% lel. No vapors noticed.
735438826 2009-03-27 Met Dave Berger on site to discuss finishing the project. I cut the duct tape protecting the threaded T where the vent stack will be attached. According to by gas detector, the readings exceeded 100% LEL. It appears that the system design and installation were successful in collecting and safely venting the natural gas.
