0609774860 | 2016-12-14 | Orphan | No Violations | My inspection this day is based on a request from Mike Mozena, inspector for the ODNR Abandoned Mine Land program on 12/1/2016 concerning a landowner, Edith Stupak, who reports a very soft area in her yard that bubbles gas and brine water. Upon investigation, I found an area @ 50 x 40 but could not locate the hole. The ground was snow-covered today but this area was not covered due to the chlorides. There are 3 separate spots within that area that may be the leaking well. QuanTabs were used to determine a chloride content of 600-700 ppm. The area lies 20 north of Deep Run and 10 south of County Road 2 (Deep Run Road). There is no evidence that the brine has reached the creek. There is a 6 tall shrub which is in the process of dying. This shrub and a chain link fence lie on the property line along the road. The landowner reported that awhile back her husband broke off the casing when mowing. She said they have AEP electric, Belmont County water and ComCast for phone and TV service. There is sewer and a water well which they currently use on the property. Pictures taken. |
0844688424 | 2017-06-21 | Orphan | No Violations | Inspector L J Parkins and I arrived with the goal of locating this hole. The landowner reported that her husband had broke off the casing when mowing and now there is just an area between the road and the creek that is soggy and bubbling gas with brine. We dug numerous holes over the area but did not find the hole. Digging was done over the dead spot in the grass as well as the most actively bubbling spots. Probing with a 4-foot long steel rod did not locate the hole. A mini-excavator will need to clear the area below grass level to hopefully locate the well. Brine was again checked for chloride content, testing 600-700 ppm with 9 LEL and .55 CH4 reading from the gas detector. The house was again vacant as the landowner is living at her house on the lake. Pictures taken, REM is 272. |
0926663284 | 2017-06-20 | Orphan | No Violations | Orphan well status inspection with fellow Orphan Well Inspector Cindy VanDyke: Upon inspection, it is observed that the ground surface is bubbling gas and low-level brine in multiple spots across an area 50 long by 40 wide. Several attempts were made to dig down and expose a wellbore or well casing. All attempts were unsuccessful. Further excavation efforts will be necessary to locate the wellbore. |
1501251009 | 2017-07-27 | Orphan | No Violations | Our visit today was to try to find the actual well casing that was leaking under the ground. Present were Gene Chini, Jason Blocker, Nate Lane, Trish Cartmell and I. We probed the ground with a 4 foot long steel probe as well as surveyed the area with a metal locator but did not find the actual hole. We used low-range QuanTabs to determine that the water was briny (tested 600-700 ppm at a previous test), with no change and dug down 12-15-inches in several spots following the strongest spots of gas. The gas detector found readings of 2.5 % CH4. Later in the day, I called Mrs. Stupak to ask about the location of the septic system. She wasnt sure if there was one as they bought the house from her father-in-law many years ago. Pictures taken. |
1502292888 | 2017-07-28 | Orphan | No Violations | Our inspection team today included Jason Blocker, Trisha Cartmell, Nate Lane, Gene Chini and Cindy VanDyke. On site, the Emergency Spill inspectors operated the FLIR camera in hopes of finding a strong stream of gas and locating the well under the grass-covered surface. It was not successful as the volume of natural gas was not large enough to detect with the camera. Several holes were again dug trying to locate the main source of the gas. Options were discussed for finding this buried hole. Pictures were taken, the gas detector was used to determine a CH4 level of 2.5 LEL and a probe was used to try and locate the buried casing. |
