The source of the release was pinpointed to a failed coupling in the plastic brine discharge line (brine with small amount of oil) from the Black-Tretow production well to the Tretow (SWIW #48) injection well. The amount of release was undeterminable. Gps coordinates were taken at the source, sample locations and the area of impact completely photo documented. Contamination at the surface was approximately 30W x 62L. Sampled four location along the water courseway east of the location for chlorides and documented. One sample location (#4) at a tile discharge into the courseway (which currently has intermittent flow) tested 1000ppm chlorides. A straw boom was set up in case any residual oil in the tile system is flushed during rains. Walked the entire courseway to Alumcreek and noted no visible or physical evidence of contamination. Remediation began by Cortland Energy Bob Masters and Gary VanDyke. Tilled in lime, manure and straw into the effected area. Mullins Well Service vac truck cleaned up all pooled waste and once the line was excavated, evacuated the discharge line and the Black-Tretow has been shut-in. Sam Foust is overseeing the remediation for Cortland Energy. Remediation will continue over the next few weeks and DNR will continue to monitor. Complete line replacement is planed by Cortland Energy within 30 days. Reported the incident to Supervisor Will Ziegler and Deputy Chief Bob Worstall. |
