Manitoba Oil and Gas Data Sources

Manitoba Data Releases

Manitoba v1.0 (August 2019)

This was the first release of Manitoba oil and gas data on WellWiki. Our primary data source was Digital Data obtained from the Manitoba Government Ministry of Growth, Enterprise and Trade.[1] We also utilized Production Reports for 1950-2019.[2] The Digital Data was provided in an Oracle dump file which we converted into a MySQL database using the "OraDump to MySQL" conversion software.[3] From this database we made use of the following tables:

  • Company_Codes: Contains the name and abbreviated name of each Manitoba operator.
  • UWI: Contains directional drilling data as well as the UWI, total depth, true vertical depth, and plug back depth for each well.
  • Units: Contains Manitoba facility data.
  • Field_codes: Lists all of the fields found in Manitoba.
  • Well_treatments: Contains Manitoba fracking treatment data.
  • Well: For each well this table lists the license number, license date, licensee, surface rights owner, license status, license status date, operator, well name, ground elevation, and kelly bushing elevation.
  • Perfs: Contains perforation treatment data.
  • Production_Data: Provides monthly waste and production data.
  • Well_License: Provides spud dates.
  • Drilling_Rigs: Provides contractor names and rig numbers for spuds.
  • Pool_List: Lists pools found in Manitoba.

We used Statistics Canada's 2016 Census Boundary Files to map each well, for which lat/lon data were available, to their respective unincorporated division and, where applicable, incorporated subdivision.

Overall, this release resulted in the generation of 10,474 Manitoba Well Pages, 603 Manitoba Operator Pages, and 98 Manitoba Division and Subdivision Pages. The team for this project consisted of Joel Gehman, Cole Miller, Alireza Azimi, and Ankesh Kumar. Funding for the project was provided in part by financial support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the University of Alberta, as well as in-kind support from the University of Alberta School of Business and the Petroleum Branch of the Manitoba Government Ministry of Growth, Enterprise and Trade.

Manitoba v2.0 (August 2020)

For this release of Manitoba oil and gas well data on Wellwiki, we used the Digital data from the latest 2020 version of the Oracle dump file which we converted into a MySQL database using the "OraDump to MySQL" conversion software. From this database we made use of the following tables:

  • Company_Codes: Contains the name and abbreviated name of each Manitoba operator.
  • UWI: Contains directional drilling data as well as the UWI, total depth, true vertical depth, and plug back depth for each well.
  • Well_treatments: Contains Manitoba fracking treatment data.
  • Well: For each well this table lists the license number, license date, licensee, surface rights owner, license status, license status date, operator, well name, ground elevation, and kelly bushing elevation.
  • Perfs: Contains perforation treatment data.
  • Well_License: Provides spud dates.
  • Drilling_Rigs: Provides contractor names and rig numbers for spuds.
  • UWI_Status_Dates: Provides the various statuses of wells.

We used Statistics Canada's 2019 Census Boundary Files to map each well, for which lat/lon data were available, to their respective unincorporated division and, where applicable, incorporated subdivision. We have also used the 2020 version of Production reports from the Government of Manitoba.

Overall, this upgrade resulted in the generation of 10470 new or modified Manitoba Well Pages. The team for this project consisted of Joel Gehman, Zhi Shen, and Georgio Cheruvelil. Financial support and in-kind support for this project was provided by the University of Alberta School of Business.
