Field inspection located the well with a positive hit on the metal detector (no visible casing at the surface) and associated dead spot in the grass, slight occasional smell of gas was noted. Confirmed location with present and then landowner Mr. Bishop. Updated coordinates, photo documented and gathered contact information. Status: updating orphan well file. |

| 1476986872 | 2016-09-29 | Orphan | No Violations | Meeting with landowner Jerry Bishop and DOGRM Morrow county inspector Eric Daugstrup on a plugged and abandoned Trempealeau well that is leaking H2S gas. There is no casing visible and the Division was able to determine the location of the well using a metal detector. There is a small ground depression and a 1 by 1 area of dead vegetation, H2S gas could be detected by smell but would not register on a Sperian gas meter. Mr. Bishop said this area would light at one time with a match. This well is shows as Plugged and Abandoned (PA) in RBDMS. Well records show this well was permitted by Kin-Ark Oil Company & Lake Shore Pipe Line Company out of Tulsa Oklahoma. The well was completed on 06-08-1964 to a total depth (TD) of 3508 in the Trempealeau Formation. The well was plugged and abandoned on 06-23-1964. Mr. Bishop claims this well activity caused gas to explode in the hand dug well (depth of 30) that his father was working on and received injuries. The water quality in the drilled water well (depth of 160) has also been affected. This well was investigated by the Division in 1983 and an Orphan case # 1983-09-099 shows up on records. The Orphan Well Section Office at New Philadelphia has no records or paper file of that year and case number. I started an Orphan well application this date and obtained a Right of Entry plug application from Mr. Bishop. I also entered this into the complaint data base. I took (14) photos. |
