1238420814 | 2009-03-26 | Orphan | No Violations | Received call from Carl Crawford about gas odor in area. Mr. Crawford lives in Village of Portage and noted odors starting in 2007. He recently purchased additional property and discovered that odor was coming from new property. Mike Coyer of Black Swamp Oil Services was called and abandoned well was located. The well was buried in rubble pile. While digging to expose the well, Mike became sick from the fumes. A dead raccoon was also found at the well. Ron Bechstein of Portage Fire Department said he recieves calls every year about odor but source was unknown at the time. There was a strong odor of H2S during inspection. Gas meter would not operate at time of inspection. Open casing had dirt in pipe. Mike recommended temporary cap until properly plugged. |
1238616844 | 2009-04-01 | Orphan | No Violations | Checked well with gas detector. Held detector at top of 10 inch PVC pipe approximately 2 feet above top of well. Detector alarm sounded for LEL and H2S. Very strong breeze at time of test. Readings after 15-30 seconds exposure were LEL 40 and H2S 37. Readings continued to rise. Meter removed after that time to prevent damage to sensors and for inspector to get away from gas being emitted. Spoke to resident in house south of well. She has lived in house 2 years and has called landlord several times because she thought there was a gas leak in the house but none was found. I explained the well may have caused the odor. |
