In February of 2013, DEP investigators responded to complaints from two properties in Dimock Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania about wellwater contamination. The DEP did not conclusively determine the cause of the contamination, however one suspect well identified was the Costello I well, operated by Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. One of its methane vents was found to be frozen, though the DEP issued a statement saying that the frozen vent was not what caused the methane contamination. It was suspected to have been an issue with the casing, though this was not confirmed by subsequent investigations.[1]
In July 2013, the Costello I well was plugged on the recommendation of the DEP, after months of attempted rehabilitation. Pollution from this particular well was described by Cabot as having a small, localized impact.[1] Cabot voluntarily provided water supplies to at least one of the properties affected throughout the investigations. The other property was purchased by Cabot for $140,000.[2] The other well suspect, Gesford 3, has not been plugged.
